Which business credit cards work abroad?

Generally speaking, you should be able to use any business credit card abroad. However, international sellers may choose to not take cards that operate on specific payment networks. This is true in the U.S. as well.
There are four major U.S. payment networks: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. All have merchants that accept their credit cards around the world, but some countries may have more than others.
Visa and Mastercard tend to dominate in terms of merchant acceptance. American Express has a global presence as well, but it may be smaller than its competitors. Discover doesn’t currently offer business credit cards.
If you want the broadest payment coverage possible, getting a Mastercard or a Visa business credit card is likely your best bet. You can look on the card itself to see if it operates on either of these payment networks.

What other fees apply to international transactions?

When you buy something with a business credit card abroad, you may be presented with the option to pay in U.S. dollars or pay in local currency.
If you choose the local currency, the payment network (Visa, Mastercard or AmEx) will take care of converting the transaction into U.S. dollars at a set exchange rate. The fee for this service is usually around 1%. If you choose U.S. dollars, you’ll use what’s known as dynamic currency conversion, which may come with additional fees.
These costs are separate from foreign transaction fees, and they aren’t avoidable for companies that do business in multiple currencies. Dynamic conversion can help you better understand costs up front instead of waiting to see them in U.S. dollars on your bill later. But if you want to limit how much you spend in fees, making purchases in local currencies is likely the better bet.

Should you get a business credit card with no foreign transaction fee?

If you use a business credit card for overseas transactions, you're wasting money if that card has a foreign transaction fee. That's especially the case since you can get a card that also doesn't charge annual fees.
For instance, if you simply purchase from a lot of international suppliers, the Capital One Spark Cash Select might be a good fit. It’s one of the few cash-back business credit cards with no foreign transaction fee, plus it offers 1.5% rewards on all purchases with no annual fee. (See rates and fees .)
If you're frequently flying overseas for work, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express could make more sense. It has a hefty fee, but it can also make your long-distance travel more comfortable with access to 1,400 airport lounges across 140 countries (terms apply).

Methodology

NerdWallet's business credit card team selects the best small-business credit cards without outside input from partners or other business interests. We evaluate business cards based on value and simplicity, weighing fees, sign-up bonuses and reward rates, alongside perks like interest-free periods, statement credits and elite status (for travel cards). Business cards that earn the highest scores deliver the most value to the greatest number of business owners.
Notable changes to our methodology for 2025 include factoring in whether spending on employee cards earns rewards and counts toward the welcome offer requirements. We also now consider what information the card issuer reports to consumer credit bureaus. Learn how NerdWallet rates small-business credit cards.
